Chapter 11 – Point-to-Point Protocol

Introduction

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
This protocol is commonly used in serial links (asynchronous or synchronous) to transfer packets
between two endpoints. These links provide full-duplex simultaneous bi-directional operation and are
assumed to deliver packets in order. It is intended that PPP provide a common solution for easy
connection of a wide variety of hosts, bridges, and routers.
The advantage of PPP is that it allows for inter-operability between endpoints (for example, routers) using
PPP for their serial communication.

Components of PPP

A method for encapsulating multi-protocol data grams.
A Link Control Protocol (LCP) for establishing, configuring, and testing the data-link
connection. The LCP is used to automatically agree upon the encapsulation format options,
handle varying limits on sizes of packets, detect a looped-back link and other common
configuration errors, and terminate the link.
A family of Network Control Protocols (NCPs) for establishing and configuring different
network-layer protocols. In the MultiConnect IP, IPCP will be negotiated

Prerequisites for Establishing a PPP Session

Before establishing a PPP session, users should be added to the user database. The user
name and password supplied by the remote peer will be authenticated using the local
database.
The following sections describe the commands to add / delete user names and passwords to
the local database.

Adding Users and Passwords

Upon successful execution of this command, the MultiConnect IP will return an OK or an error
message.
