ThetransmissionoftheI01wasdevelopedbytheBMW GroupanditsbeingproducedintheBMW
plantinDingolfing.
Thetransmissionhasanoverallratioof9.7:1.Theenginespeedatthetransmissioninputis9.7
timesgreaterthanatthetransmissionoutput.Thisratioisrealizedusingtwospurgearunits.In
additiontotheinputshaft,thereisalsoanintermediateshaftinthetransmission.Thespurgearunit
atthetransmissionoutputisfixedtothedifferentialcageanddrivesthedifferential.Thedifferential
distributesthetorquetotwooutputsandenablestheenginespeedadjustmentbetweenthetwo
outputs.Thedifferentialhasanalmostidenticaldesigntothatofafrontaxledifferential,asused
inBMWvehicleswithafour-wheeldrive(frontaxledifferential 156).ForuseintheI01onlysurface
hardeningmeasuresandahigh-strengthmaterialareused.
