9.RangeExtenderElectricalMachine
Theelectricalmachineisdesignedforalargetemperaturerange.Thecoolantcanreachatemperature
ofupto70 °C(158°F)attheinput(supply)ataflowofsixlitersperminute.Thetemperatureat
theinputistime-restrictedandcanriseupto85 °C(185°F).Andalthoughtheelectricalmachine
demonstrateslesslossesduringenergyconversionthanacombustionengine,itshousingcanabsorb
atemperatureofupto100 °C(212°F).
Thetwoconnectionsforthecoolantlinesintegratetherangeextenderelectricalmachineinthe
coolingcircuitoftheelectricmotor.Thisisdescribedinthechapter"Coolingofelectricmotor
components".ThegraphicsinthischaptershowtherangeextenderelectricalmachineandtheW20
enginewithoutcoating.Intheproductionvehiclesometimesthesecomponentsarestillcoveredbya
foampart.Thisservesfortheacousticencapsulationoftherangeextendercomponentsandabsorbs
noiseswhichthecustomermayfindirritating.
Thehousingoftherangeextenderelectricalmachineisairtightandwaterproof.Aventlineisrequired
topreventwater(resultingfromtemperaturechangesandthuspossiblecondensationofairhumidity)
collectinginsidetherangeextenderelectricalmachine.
9.3.2.Sensors
Temperaturesensor
Inordertoavoiddamagetothecomponentsduetothehightemperature,thereisatemperature
sensorintherangeextenderelectricalmachineoftheI01.Thetemperaturesensorisatemperature-
dependentresistorandislocatedinthecoilsofthestator.Thetemperatureoftherotorisnot
measureddirectly,butcanbedeterminedfromthemeasuredvaluesofthetemperaturesensorsin
thestator.Thesignalisreadinandevaluatedanalogouslybytherangeextenderelectricalmachine
electronics.
