OWA is a browser-based web app – known as "Outlook" or "Outlook on the Web". It is an
email client, like the Microsoft Office Outlook application, except accessible from any
computer through a web browser. You visit OWA to check your email and calendar from the
web.
EWS is instead a backend service, and non-end user facing service tool exposed to the
internet so applications and devices, such as endpoints, can connect into Office365 or a
private Exchange system to retrieve emails or calendars.
To retrieve an Exchange calendar, the endpoint must be able to access the EWS address
over the internet, or on a private network.
If using Microsoft Office365, your Exchange Server Address (Exchange Web Services URL)
is automatically retrieved using just your email address. So, the Exchange Server Address is
not needed if your company is using Microsoft Office365 for e-mails.
If using earlier Exchange Server version (Exchange 2016/2013), you must specify the EWS
server address in the endpoint Calendar configuration.
For earlier versions of Exchange, this address will always be in the format of something like:
https://<mymail.mydomain.com>/EWS/Exchange.asmx
To retrieve your Exchange Server EWS Address, you can follow below instructions.
For Microsoft Exchange Online
For Microsoft Exchange (on premise)
Using Microsoft Exchange Management Shell
Finding the EWS URL from an Outlook 2013 or higher installation

Access your email box account using Outlook Web App (OWA)
For OWA Click Options > See All Options > Account > My Account > Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access
In the list of entries, locate the server name. The URL of exchange web service for the mailbox is the
URL: https://<EXCHANGE_SERVER_HOSTNAME>/owa/...
The URL can be composed using the following syntax: https://<EXCHANGE_SERVER_HOSTNAME>/EWS/Exchange.asmx
Most Exchange servers have the Client Access Server (CAS) role installed. This role gives them the possibility to receive and
process EWS requests. If you confirm that your server has the ClientAccess server role installed, then its Fully Qualified
Domain Name (FQDN) can be used to obtain the EWS URL in the following way:
https://<FQDN>/EWS/Exchange.asmx
where <FQDN> is your machine's Fully Qualified Domain Name.
Open Exchange Management Shell and run the following command.
Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory |Select name, *url* | fl
The output will be like the following:
Name
: EWS (Default Web Site)
InternalNLBBypassUrl : https://server name/ews/exchange.asmx
InternalUrl
: https://server name/EWS/Exchange.asmx
ExternalUrl
: https://mail.domain.com/ews/exchange.asmx
The server name is visible as "Access this account on the web" info in the Outlook Client, Info menu, in the format
https://<yourserver>/owa/yourdomain
Extract the part before /owa... and use it as
Important
if your company uses Office365, the EWS address is always the same for all
the organizations: https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx.
https://<yourserver>/EWS/Exchange.asmx
