1.6.5 Design

The knee joint is placed 6 mm posteriorly (it is essential to observe recommendations for knee
joint alignment in Section 3). This facilitates easy extension of the knee joint and assures problem-
free unlocking.
The joint bushing (radial bearing) and bearing washer (axial bearing) are made of maintenance-
free plastic. The wedge lock is connected to an electronically controlled spring, which locks it to
the lower joint section. The electronic controller, consisting of a gyroscope and 2D acceleration
sensors to sense the gait phase, measures the joint's position during the gait cycle and opens
the joint accordingly before toe lift-off, locking it again in the extended position before heel strike.
The enclosed joint bar cases serve for attachment of the system joint bar or lamination lancets.
The electronic components are designed so that they can be replaced by a technician. The
batteries can be removed from the lamination frame and charged in the charger. The charger
has two ports so that two batteries can be charged simultaneously.
