Device name
Before an IO device can be addressed by an IO controller, it must have a device name since
its IP address is a fixed address assigned to the device name.
This approach has been chosen for PROFINET because names are easier to manage than
complex IP addresses.
The assignment of a device name to a specific IO device is comparable to the setting of the
PROFIBUS address for a DP slave.
An IO device does not have a device name in the factory state. A device name must first be
assigned to an IO device before it can be addressed by the IO controller, for example, for
transmitting configuration data (including the IP address) during startup or for exchanging
user data in cyclic operation.
Fieldbus
Industrial communication system that connects a large number of field devices such as
probes (sensors), final controlling elements, and drives (actuators) to a control device.
GSD file
The properties of a PROFINET device are described in a GSD (General Station Description)
file that contains all the information required
for configuration. Similar to PROFIBUS, you can integrate a PROFINET device in an
automation system using a GSD file.
In the case of PROFINET IO, the GSD file is in XML format. The structure of the GSD file
conforms to ISO 15734, the worldwide standard for device descriptions.
GSDML
The GSDML language is defined by the GSDML scheme. A GSDML scheme contains
validity rules that allow you to check the syntax of a GSD file, for example. Manufacturers of
IO devices can obtain GSDML schemes (in the form of scheme files) from PROFIBUS
International.
I&M data
Identification and maintenance data.
Information stored in a module that supports you when checking the plant configuration,
locating hardware changes in a plant , or performing troubleshooting for the plant. I&M data
enable modules to be uniquely identified online.
