7.7 Firmware update of the PROFINET communication module
Note
Do not disconnect the communication module from the basic device
You should never disconnect the PROFINET communication module from the basic device
during the firmware update. The voltage supply to the device must not be interrupted. If the
update is interrupted, it must be restarted.
Performing a firmware update
1. Start STEP 7 (SIMATIC Manager).
2. Select the "PLC" > "Display Accessible Nodes" menu command.
3. Select the soft starter you wish to update.
4. Select the "PLC > Update Firmware" menu command.
5. In the "Update Firmware" dialog, select the path to the firmware update files (*.UPD)
using the "Browse" button.
6. After you have selected a file, information on the module and minimum firmware version
for which the file is suitable appears in the lower part of the "Update Firmware" dialog.
7. Click the "Run" button. STEP 7 checks whether the selected file is accepted by the
communication module and, if the result is positive, then downloads the file to the
communication module. If this requires changing the operating state of the
communication module, you will be asked to perform these tasks in the relevant dialog
boxes. The communication module then automatically updates the firmware. This
process takes approximately 20 minutes.
8. Once the firmware of the communication module has performed the update, the
communication module needs to be restarted. This activates the previously transferred
firmware.
9. A firmware of the 3RW44 basic device is then performed automatically in the background.
During this time, the "BUS" LED flickers red for approximately 20 s (old FW is being
deleted) and then yellow (new FW is being written). This process takes approximately 3
minutes.
10. Following an automatic restart of the device, the firmware update is complete.
11. You can read the current firmware version via the module status of the communication
module.
12. The firmware version of the basic device can be read from the device display: Status
display > Firmware information
You have updated your PROFINET communication module and the 3RW44 basic device
online with a new firmware version.
