5.5.7 KNIFE/CUTTER ARM SHAFT ASSEMBLY OPERATION - Fig. 5-11
In order for the machine to efficiently cut and rivet the strips, the Knife Blade (1) must be
heated to an operating temperature of 375°F (190° C). This is accomplished by placing
the Knife (1) between the Upper Heater (2), and Lower Heater (3). The Knife (1) and
Heaters (2 & 3) are assembled onto the Knife Support (4) with Ins ulators (5 & 6). The
Insulators are used to keep the heat directed to the Knife and away from the Knife
Support (4).
The Eccentric Shaft (7) is used to position the Knife (1) for cutting operations. This is
accomplished in a two step process. In the first step, the Cutter Arms (8) are deflected by
the Cutter Cams (2, Figure 5-9), to bring the Knife (1) forward to cut the pins just below
the bottom strip. In the second step, the Extruder Arm (9) is deflected by the Extruder
Cam (3, Figure 5-9), which slightly raises the Knife Assembly to form the rivets.
