backup process
The process of making copies of the data stored on your disk so that you can recover
that data after an accidental loss.
bad block
A damaged block on a disk that the system cannot access. Blocks become damaged
from wear or abuse.
barrel connector
A female connector for connecting two sections of ThinWire cable.
baud rate
The speed at which signals are serially transmitted along a communications line.
One baud equals one bit per second.
binary
A number system that uses two digits: 0 and 1. They are represented in system
circuitry by two voltage levels, and programs are executed in binary form.

A binary digit; the smallest imit of information in a binary system of notation,
designated as a 0 or a 1.
block
A standard unit of storage space on a disk or tape surface; 512 bytes. Although a
drive writes data to the disk or tape 1 byte at a time, a block is the smallest amount
of space on a disk or tape that the system can access.

boot
lb bring a device or system to a d^ned state where it can operate on its own. See
bootstrap.
bootable medium
A hard disk, optical disc, or magnetic tape cartridge containing software (such as an
operating system) that can be loaded into memory and executed.
