after a test number, an error has been detected. See Section 7.1.1.
7.1.1 Power-Up Error Messages
If an error is detected during power-up, the power-up sequence
contains single question marks (?), double question marks (??),
or asterisks (*), next to the identifier for which the error was
detected.
For example:

A single question mark (?) next to a device indicates a minor
problem, and the system will usually boot okay. See Section 7.1.2
for examples of problems flagged with a single question mark.
