9.1 Preparation

Make sure that the following information and equipment is available:
Configuration Information
For some procedures, you will need the following information:
Load host node name(s)
DECNIS 600 Ethernet address(es)
Slot numbers for Network Interface Cards
Details of the link associated with each slot
This information is included on the DEC Network Integration Server 600
Configuration Card and the configuration cards for the Network Interface
Cards.
Loopback Connectors
For some tests you will need a loopback connector. Each Network Interface
Card kit includes a loopback connector for the card and its cables. For
more information, refer to the Cabling Instructions and Specifications card
for the Network Interface Card.
Static Protection Equipment
For some problem solving procedures you will need an antistatic kit that
includes an antistatic wrist strap and antistatic mat. Section 3.4 shows
how to attach the static protection equipment.

9.2 How to Identify the Problem

The amount of information that you have about your problem determines how
you identify the problem and use this part of the manual:
If the software is loaded, or was loaded when the problem occurred, check
event messages. The DEC Network Integration Server Event Messages text
file describes events logged by the DECNIS 600. The event message may
indicate a fault with the DECNIS 600, for example, an overtemperature
problem. You can use this information to refer to the relevant section in
Chapter 10.
