Glossary of Terms

ASCII text file A data file in a standard format recogniz-
able by most computers. ("ASCII" stands for "Ameri-
can Standard Code for Information Interchange.")
Browse window A window displaying a list of records
or other items on the ID-3000 display. Allows the user
to browse through the list by pressing ↑, ↓, Page Up or
Page Down. A single item from the browse window
can often be selected by moving the highlight to the
item and pressing Enter.
Character A single letter, numeral or symbol displayed
on the screen.
Cursor A small flashing block or underline on the dis-
play indicating where the next typed character will ap-
pear. Usually can be moved with the ↑,↓,← or → keys.
Database A file containing multiple data records.
ID-3000 systems use multiple databases, such as ap-
plicant databases, visitor databases and audit trail da-
tabases.
Field A group of particular spaces in a record reserved
for characters (letters, numerals or symbols). An identi-
fication number field with nine spaces, for example,
may be reserved for nine-digit identification numbers.
File A collection of related data records or instructions.
Menu A list of choices displayed on a screen. Selecting
an item from the menu starts an operation or displays
more choices.
Password A unique word or series of characters typed
by an operator to log onto the system. Prevents un-
authorized persons from using the system.
