2·5 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND TUNE·UP PROCEDURES
SPARK PLUG
Inspect Every 30 Hours and Replace Every 60 Hours
The plug gap is adju sted to 0 .8 - 0.9 mm (0 .03 - 0 .04 in ).
The gap is co rrectly adjusted wi th a thickness gauge. When
ca rbon is deposited on the spa rk plug . rem ove the carbon
deposit s with wire or pin . If the electrodes are extremely
worn or burnt , replace the plug. Also replace th e plug
if
it
has a broken insu lator, d amaged thread. etc.
NGK DPR9EA-9
or
NIPPON DENSO X27 EPR-U9 as listed in
the table should be used as the standard plug . However. the
heat range o f th e plug should be selected to meet the re-
quirem ent s of speed, actual load. fuel, et c. If the plug need
to be replaced , it is recommended that the standard plug
listed in the table be select ed. Remove the plug and inspect
the insulator. Proper heat range would be indicated if it in·
sulator was light brown in color.
If
it is blac kened by car-
bon, it should be replaced by a hot type NGK OPR8EA-9 or
NIPPON DENSO X24EPR-U9.
NOTE:
To ch eck the spark plug, first make sure that the fuel tank
contains unleaded g8soline, and after
a
test ride if the plug
is sooty with carbon or burnt white, replace it.
NOTE:
Confirm the thread size and rea ch when replacing the plug.

screw portion of the plug hole and engine damage may
reslut.
NOTE:
" R n t ype spark plug is installed for some specifica tions. uR "
type spark plug has a resistor 10cBted at the cen ter electrode
to pre ven t radio noise.
SPARK ARRESTER

Clean Every 30 Hours
I
• Remove th e drain bolt .
• Start the engi ne and rev it to blowout the accumulated
carbon particles .
• Stop the engine. and install the drain bolt securely.
WARNING :
Only clean the spark arrester in an open area away from com-
bustible materials. Exhausted hot carbon particles can start
a fire .
