Chapter 5: Alerts
Overview
Alerts are highly focused reports which use performance metrics to analyze system
operation for signs of problems with the system's hardware, applications, and
security. Should a potential problem be detected, alerts flag the administrator's
attention through a beeping tone which is emitted twice a second until the MMR
Reports application is maximized; the triggered alert is highlighted in red.
Alerts are not real-time based; instead, they analyze the previous day's Operational
Measurement data for problems. They are typically calculated each morning prior
to the arrival of the administrator and provide a quick way to check for any
conditions requiring attention. Alerts stay red until they are cleared using the Clear
Alert command in the Maintenance pull-down menu (or by pressing the F5 key).
The default interval for viewing an alert is one day since, under usual
circumstances, an alert should be viewed and cleared at least once a day. If an alert
is triggered and not cleared within a day, the default interval for viewing the alert
increases until the alert is cleared.
For example, if the Excessive Failed Logons Alert goes into alert status, it indicates
that, in the past 24 hours, there were more failed logons than the threshold value.
This may mean that hackers have been probing the Meridian Mail system's
mailboxes.
