FIAT· 850 PASSENGER CARS
Reduced Pedal Free Travel.
POSSIBLE
CAUSES
1) Master cylinder compensating hole blanked on
account of misadjusted plunger rod.
2) Master cylinder compensating hole clogged by
impurities.
3) Master cylinder compensating hole clogged by a
swollen valve-ring.
Excessive Pedal Travel.
POSSIBLE
CAUSES
1) System has not been bled.
2) Shoe clearance misadjusled.
3) Fluid level in reservoir is too low.
4) Master cylinder piston rod misadjusled.
5) Deteriorated rubber seals In master cylinder or In
wheel cylinders.
6) Excessive swelling of hoses because those used
were of poor quality.
7) The'mal expansion of d'ums because of excessive
overheating.
Shoes Drag Permanently on Drums.
POSSIBLE
CAUSES
1) Poor clearance between brake shoes and drums.
2) Weak or snapped return springs.
3) Brake pedal has no free travel.
4) Seized maste' cylinder piston.
5) Master cylinder flooded because compensating
hole is clogged.
REMEDIES
1) Adjust the rod· to - piston
clearance
and
set to .OtI8"
(0.3 mm).
2) Clean and bleed the system.
3) Flush the system, replace the valve-ring, refill with new
fluid and bleed the lines.
REMEDIES
1) Bleed the system.
2) Adjust the brake shoe-to-drum clearance.
3) Refill with FIAT special «Blue label» fluid (or equivalent
non-mineral g,ade)i if required, bleed the system.
4) Adjust the ,od-to-piston clearance at .0118" (0.3 mm).
5) Replace the seals and bleed the system.
6) Replace by FIAT-approved hoses and bleed the system.
7) Allow drums to cool off.
Check brake shoe linings and
drums.
Replace damaged parts.
REMEDIES
1) Adjust clearance.
2) Replace the springs.
3) Adjust ttle rod-to-piston clearance at .0118" (0.3 mm) .
• ) Service the master cylinder, replace the piston and bleed
the system.
5) Service the master cylinder, replace the valve-ring if swol-
len or deteriorated, clean the compensating hole and bleed
the system.
