ations of each cluster exist due to optional equipment
and regulatory requirements.
The standard cluster includes the following gauges:
• coolant temperature gauge
• fuel gauge
• gear selector indicator (automatic transmission)
@ oil pressure gauge
• speedometer/odometer
© trip odometer
• voltmeter.
The low line cluster includes provisions for the fol
lowing indicator lamps:
© airbag indicator lamp
® anti-lock brake system lamp
• brake warning lamp
• four-wheel drive indicator lamp
• headlamp high beam indicator lamp
© low oil pressure warning lamp
• maintenance required indicator (heavy-duty cycle
emissions engines)
• malfunction indicator (Check Engine) lamp
• seat belt reminder lamp
• turn signal indicator lamps
• upshift indicator lamp.
The high line cluster includes all of the gauges and
indicator lamps found in the low line cluster, but
adds a analog tachometer, low fuel warning lamp and
low washer fluid warning lamp. Some of the low line
cluster gauges and indicator lamps have different po
sitions or sizes in the high line cluster to accommo
date the tachometer.

MESSAGE CENTER
In addition to the warning lamps found in the in
strument cluster, a message center area directly be
low the climate controls (Fig. 3) has a provision for
up to 5 warning lamps. These lamps may or may not
be functional depending upon optional equipment
and regulatory requirements affecting the vehicle be-
• ing serviced. The available lamps in the message cen
ter include:
• hazard warning indicator (export)
• master lighting indicator (export)
• transmission oil temperature warning (V-10 and
diesel engines with automatic transmission)
® wait-to-start (diesel engine)
• water-in-fuel (diesel engine).
GMJGES
With the ignition switch in the ON or START posi
tion, voltage is supplied to all gauges through the in
strument cluster printed circuit. With the ignition
switch in the OFF position, voltage is not supplied to
the gauges. A gauge pointer may remain within the
gauge scale after the ignition switch is OFF. How-
' ever, the gauges do not accurately indicate any vehi
cle condition unless the ignition switch is ON.
All gauges except the odometer are air core mag
netic units. Two fixed electromagnetic coils are lo
cated within the gauge. These coils are wrapped at
right angles to each other around a movable perma
nent magnet. The movable magnet is suspended
within the coils on one end of a shaft. The gauge nee
dle is attached to the other end of the shaft.
