2.3 Typical Applications
The following examples provide information about typical applications using the
Router. They describe using the Router to connect a remote site via a cable
modem, using the Router to segment a local area network, and using the Router to
connect a LAN to the Internet using one shared IP address.
2.3.1 C
ONNECTING A
In the following example, the Router is used to connect a LAN to the Internet via
DSL or a cable modem.
Kernal: (outgoing TCP/IP connection sharing a single Internet IP address or using
multiple IP mapping)
• Virtual Server (allowing incoming specific TCP/IP service request redirect to
an internal server)
• Static Routing (Routing table setting to Internal Local Gateways)
• Firewall
External: Fixed External Port IP or DHCP client (Dynamic IP assigned)
Internal: Device Fixed IP, DHCP Server
