5 Upgrading the storage system

The HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System is comprised of a common hardware platform
containing two server blades. Each server runs Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 or later.
When HP determines that it is desirable to upgrade one or more of these components, a notification
is posted to the HP support website for the HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System with the release
notes and the updated code. HP recommends that you upgrade the storage system software as
part of normal system maintenance for increased reliability and a better customer experience.
Upgrades might also be necessary when replacing a server blade or other component.

Maintaining your storage system

HP recommends the following guidelines for maintaining your system, depending on your
environment:
You are not required to install any updates if your storage system is working properly.
If security updates are important for your operating environment, you can:
Use Microsoft Windows Update to download updates.
Use Windows Update Server to update the server blades in the storage system.
Download and install specific security updates as needed.
If your maintenance policy is to only update servers to current and tested versions of drivers,
firmware, and software, install the services releases when they are available.
If your maintenance policy allows you to update servers to current versions of drivers, firmware,
and software that have not been tested with the storage system, you can go to
www.hp.com
page or the platform product page (for example, the specific server model used for the storage
system server blade).
When updating the server blades, update the NIC drivers, firmware, and software in the same
update window. HP recommends updating the RAID controller drivers, firmware, and software
in the same update window to ensure proper operation of the storage system.

Determining the current storage system software version

You can find the version using the Server Manager or the registry.
From the Server Manager:
1.
Expand the tree under System Manager.
2.
Select System and Network Settings and locate the value for HP Quick Restore.
3.
Read the value for HP Quick Restore in the System and Network Settings right pane.
