Glossary

This appendix defines terms used in this guide to categorize attack elements and
system elements.
1000Base-SX 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) baseband Ethernet over two multimode optical fibers using shortwave
laser optics.
access control
The mechanisms and policies that restrict access to computer resources. An access control
list (ACL), for example, specifies what operations different users can perform on specific
files and directories.
access sharing The act of permitting two or more users simultaneous access to file servers or devices.
action A predefined response to an event or alert by a system or application.
active A status that indicates that a program, job, policy, or scan is running. For example, when a
scheduled scan executes, it is considered active.
Administrator An individual with an account that is configured to perform administrative tasks, such as
view reports, receive alerts, and add or delete objects. This group and its respective set of
permissions is predefined, and cannot be modified. See also
alarm A sound or visual signal that is triggered by an error condition.
alert See notification. See also event.
alert threshold A rule that monitors suspicious activity based on access attempts and time intervals. You
can customize or disable the default threshold according to your needs.
ALERT_NUMBER Represents the number of times that the response rule has been triggered for the given
incident.
appliance A specialized server designed for ease of installation and maintenance. Hardware and
software are bundled, and applications are pre-installed. The device is plugged into a
network and can begin working almost immediately with little configuration.
archive A collection of computer files that have been packaged together for backup, to transport to
some other location, for saving away from the computer so that more hard disk storage
can be made available, or for some other purpose. An archive can include a simple list of
files or files organized under a directory or catalog structure (depending on how a
particular program supports archiving).
