This glossary defines terms and concepts used in this manual. For
readers who are new to scanning, imaging, and character recog-
nition concepts, this glossary may be useful not only as a refer-
ence, but also as a primer on optical character recognition
technology.
Some definitions provided here contain terms in bold letters.
This means that these terms are also defined elsewhere in the
glossary.
A
annotation—A text note, arrow, circle, stamp, or other object
added to a Pagis document to point out (annotate) some item in
the document.
automatic document feeder (ADF)—An attachment to a
flatbed scanner that allows multiple pages to be loaded at one
time, and automatically scanned.
auto-orientation—In Pagis Pro, a capability to rotate a scanned
page so that it is oriented correctly. For example, if you scanned a
document upside-down in your scanner, Pagis Pro often can
detect and correct this before creating the Pagis document.
B
binary—In the context of a page image, refers to a black and
white, as opposed to color or grayscale, image.
bit depth—The number of bits of data used to store the color of
one picture element, or pixel, of an image. For example, a black
and white image has a bit depth of 1 (0=white, 1=black).
Grayscale and color data is stored at higher bit depths—4, 8, 16,
24, and 32 bits per pixel.
Brightness—See scanner brightness.
