However, if you are making major changes to your system, such as installing a large new
software product or a new operating system, perform a Full Backup before the installation.
This lets you restore your software in the event that a problem causes a hard disk failure or
severely changes the setup of your system.
Full backups are also recommended after you do several incremental backups. This lets you
recover a full system with much fewer disk swaps. There is a greater chance for error when
too many incremental backups fall between full backups. If incremental backups are
restored out of order, files may be lost inadvertently.
NEC recommends the following two-month backup schedule for reliable backups with the
least amount of diskettes:
n
A monthly Full Backup with new diskettes.
n
Four weekly Incremental Backups using new diskettes each week so files aren't
lost.
n
A monthly Full Backup with new diskettes at the same time as the fourth weekly
backup.
If there are any severe problems during the backup, this monthly backup will be
the same as the four weekly incremental backups plus the last month's full backup.
Therefore, it is important NOT re-use last month's Full Backup diskettes at this
time.
n
Four weekly Incremental Backups using last month's weekly diskettes. Since the
monthly Full Backup was successful, the weekly diskettes are no longer needed.
n
A monthly Full Backup using the diskettes from two months ago. Since last
month's Full Backup replaces the two-month old backup, the diskettes are now
safe to use.
Follow this schedule and you will never lose more than a week's work at most.

DESKTOP MANAGEMENT INTERFACE

The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is the new standard for managing computer
systems. DMI is an interface between management applications and managed components
such as systems, network boards, and printers used with or without networked computers.
DMI allows a computer running a network management application to retrieve system
information such as the system serial number, product model number, BIOS revision
number, memory capacity, disk capacity, expansion board settings, or applications.
It is easy to get the status of each system via DMI even if the network consists of
computers from different manufacturers. DMI is not a protocol but an interface. It
complements network protocols like the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
