The SMI Master Module can be operated on fieldbus couplers in fieldbus coupler mode,
as well as on controllers in either fieldbus coupler mode or full mode. A detailed descrip-
tion of both modes and functions can be found below.

4.1 Operating Modes

The SMI Master Module supports the following operating modes:

• Fieldbus coupler mode

• Full mode

4.1.1 Fieldbus Coupler Mode
Fieldbus coupler mode is the default state for the SMI master module and enables control
of the SMI LoVo Drives via a cyclic process image without PLC programming. Command
values and changes to bits in the process image are converted directly to SMI com-
mands.
Fieldbus coupler mode offers the following functions:
• Shutter and slat positioning
• Controller locking
• Energy saving mode
• Auto-replace
• Automatic addressing
• 1-button operation/construction site mode
• 2-button mode
• Forced position
4.1.2 Full Mode
In full mode, process data is communicated via the Mailbox 2.0 protocol, which is super-
imposed on the process image. The WAGO SMI Configurator and IEC function blocks al-
low other SMI functions to be used in addition to the functions available in fieldbus cou-
pler mode. The IEC function blocks constitute the interface between the SMI LoVo Drive
and the IEC variable.
Full mode offers the following functions:
• All fieldbus coupler mode functions
• System expansion
• Logging
• System image readout
• Extended SMI command set
• Swapping addresses and readdressing
