The connected SMI LoVo Drives are identified by unique IDs. When automatic address-
ing is started, all SMI LoVo Drives with SMI address 0 are written to and then sorted in
ascending order.
The sorting takes at most 16 SMI LoVo Drives into account. If there are more than 16
drives, the system remains at address 0 with an address conflict.
Automatic addressing can take up to 60 seconds.

4.2.1.4 Auto-Replace

The auto-replace function provides support for replacing drives, e.g., if an
SMI LoVo Drive needs to be replaced due to a defect, and automatically transfers the
drive address and drive configuration of the drive that is to be replaced to the new drive.
The auto-replace function can detect the new SMI LoVo Drive at any address and can
also resolve any address conflicts with existing drives.
The SMI Master Module saves a copy of the drive configuration in persistent memory.
When the auto-replace function is executed, the new drive first obtains the SMI address
of the drive that is to be replaced and then its drive configuration, which contains the pa-
rameters for fixed positions POS 1 and POS 2. A comment programmed into the
SMI Master Module using the WAGO SMI Configurator or the IEC function blocks is
transferred and thus retained.
When the auto-replace function is enabled, if multiple new drives are added after a drive
has been removed, then a bad combination of SMI addresses can cause the drive config-
uration and comments of the drive that is to be replaced to be overwritten or deleted by
one of the new drives. The only way to restore the data is using the WAGO SMI Configu-
rator or IEC function blocks.
If the auto-replace function is disabled, then new SMI LoVo Drives overwrite the drive
configuration of the removed drive which is saved in the SMI Master Module and delete
the programmed comments.
For proper operation of the auto-replace function, the following requirements must be
met:
• The auto-replace function must be enabled in the module configuration.
• At most 16 SMI LoVo Drives can be in the SMI line at the same time.
• Only one SMI LoVo Drive can be removed, and only one new SMI LoVo Drive inserted.
• The new SMI LoVo Drive must replace the SMI LoVo Drive that is to be replaced at the
same address.

4.2.1.5 Controller Locking

This function allows you to lock the SMI LoVo Drives, e.g., to conduct maintenance. The
drives can be then be moved to the forced position. However, motion commands are not
canceled.
You can activate and deactivate controller locking via extended control byte C1.

4.2.1.6 Energy Saving Mode

The SMI master module can be set to switch to energy saving mode after a configurable
period of time if no activity occurs on the SMI bus. The internal SMI power supply is
switched off.
