Keep children at a safe distance.
Observe these Operating Instructions.
Observe the following notes:
Recharge the battery more frequently in the
R
following cases:
You predominantly drive short distances.

You predominantly drive at low outside
-
temperatures.
You leave the vehicle parked for a lengthy
-
period.
In order for the batteries to achieve their maxi-
mum possible service life, they must always be
su ciently charged.
Consult a quali ed specialist workshop if you
R
wish to leave your vehicle parked up for long
periods.
When you park the vehicle, remove the key if
R
you do not require any electrical consumers.
The vehicle will then use very little energy, thus
conserving battery power.
If your vehicle requires jump-starting, or if you
R
wish to provide jump-starting assistance to
another vehicle, only use the jump-start con-
nection point in the engine compartment
(
page 189).

Your vehicle may be equipped with the following
three batteries, depending on the equipment ver-
sion:
Starter battery in the seat base of the right-

ARNING Risk of explosion from a frozen

battery

A discharged battery may freeze at tempera-
tures slightly above or below freezing point.
If the warning/indicator lamps do not light up in
the instrument cluster at temperatures around or
below freezing, it is highly probable that the dis-
charged battery has frozen.
In this case, observe the following points:

During starting assistance or battery charging,
battery gas can be released.
Always allow a battery to thaw before
#
charging it or performing starting assis-
tance.
Do not give the vehicle starting assistance or
charge the battery.
The service life of a battery that has been
thawed may be reduced drastically.
The starting behavior may deteriorate, particu-
larly at low temperatures.
It is recommended that you have a thawed bat-
tery checked at a quali ed specialist workshop.
ARNING Risk of explosion due to a mix-
ture of explosive gases
A mixture of explosive gases can escape from
the battery during charging and jump starting.
Fire, open ames, smoking and creating
#
sparks must be avoided.
Make sure that there is su cient ventila-
#
tion.
Do not stand over the battery.
#
ARNING Danger of chemical burns from
the battery acid
Battery acid is caustic.
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or
#
clothing.
Do not lean over the battery.
#
Do not inhale battery gases.
#
Keep children away from the battery.

Immediately rinse battery acid o thor-

seek medical attention immediately.
