3.2.1. Acoustic contact liquid

Pure water or a mixture of ultrasound gel and water is used as a coupling medium to close any air
gaps between the patient contact and the patient.
The water in the acoustic contact liquid used in MR-HIFU treatments must meet the following
requirements:
Pure water, preferably distilled.
Hard water (with high mineral content) should be avoided.
Microbiologically clean.
Contains no chemicals or particles that can cause degradation of the MR signal, susceptibility
effects or localized heating of skin or the inner margin of the subcutaneous fat layer in the MR
scanner's RF field or in the ultrasound field.
