dpi
Dots per inch. A measure of screen and printer resolution that is
expressed as the number of dots that a device can print or display
per linear inch.
Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
A file format that stores PostScript information in an image file so
that it may be transferred as a unit to a suitable page layout or
drawing program or used for preparing images for later
typesetting. An encapsulated PostScript file has two parts: a low
resolution (72 dpi) bitmap picture of the screen and a full
resolution-independent PostScript description to pass on to a
suitable printer.
four-color process
The most common full-color printing process which uses color
separation to produce one image for each of the four process
colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). Each color is then
overprinted to reproduce the full color of the image.
gamma correction
The process of adjusting the brightness of the printed image
relative to the original across the midtones.
grayscale
The range of intensity increments between white and black.
image area
The area inside the page margins.
line art
A drawing that contains only black and white with no shades of
gray.
PostScript
A page-description language from Adobe Systems that offers
flexible font capability and high-quality graphics.
prime
To print a test pattern which exercises all the inkjets of each
cartridge. This function is important to assuring good print
quality.
printer driver
Software which translates computer data into a form understood
by the printer to allow printing of text and images.
