    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Quick Start Congratulations on your purchase of an ENCAD CADJET 3D wide format color printer. This guide gives you details on the following: • unpacking and assembling the printer • loading media • filling ink reservoirs •...
  • Page 6 ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Orient the stand legs so that they align with the holes in the bottom of the printer head. Attach both stand legs to the printer head using the screwdriver and eight screws contained in the accessory box. Two persons are required to lift the printer.
  • Page 7 CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Attach the basket to the legs using the screws and thumbscrews provided. Use the two thumbscrews on the front portion of the basket. When the basket is not in use, you can loosen the thumbscrews and move the basket up out of the way.

    ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Removing protective shipping material CAUTION: Before turning on the printer, make sure to remove the protective material that secures the carriage. Remove the protective film from the control panel and remove the tape from the ink reservoir cover. Do not remove black tape affixed to left and right sides of the carriage assembly.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Using the control panel The control panel at the right side of the printer includes eight buttons and a display which indicates modes and settings. An overview is provided here so that you can load media and ink cartridges. Details on menu options are included in the User Guide on the system CD-ROM.

    Be sure to load from the back only. Set the roll holders to the width of the media. IMPORTANT! It is very important to use only ENCAD media with your printer. Some third party media have been found to generate electrostatic discharge in excess of 20 KV.

    ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Installing the cutter A cutter located in the ink cartridge carriage cuts roll media. The printer is shipped with the cutter installed. Be careful when handling the cutter to avoid injury. Cutting media with a worn cutter can cause the media to jam and create a ragged cut line.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Filling the ink reservoirs The printer can support long, uninterrupted printing runs because of the large capacity of each of the four ink reservoirs. The ink reservoirs are located in the printer's left side cover. A reorder line on the reservoir reminds you when to reorder ink.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Installing the ink cartridges This printer uses only cartridges specifically designed for it. They are not com- patible with cartridges designed for other printer models. Use of other cartridges may damage the printer and/or prevent it from printing. Ink cartridges ship prefilled with ink.

    ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Priming the ink delivery lines After filling the ink reservoirs, you will need to prime each of the four ink deliv- ery lines to establish ink flow through the lines and ink cartridges. The ink primer is provided for this purpose.
  • Page 17 CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Press the button on the ink primer to activate the vacuum and draw ink from the reservoir into the needle. When ink is visible in the ink primer sight tube (should take 5-10 seconds), remove the cartridge needle from the ink primer and quickly insert it into the hole in the top of the ink cartridge.
  • Page 18 ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Insert the cartridge into the carriage. Repeat with each cartridge. Press Utility Menu/Access Cartridge to return the carriage to the service station. 10 Print the color test, prime test pattern and paper axis test as described later in this guide.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide When removing the ink primer, use the silicon tip to wipe and clean the jet plate. Remember to clean the silicon tip of ink before moving to the next cartridge. 13 Reprint the color test and prime test pattern. (The paper axis test is only required when changing media).

    ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Printing the prime pattern Before printing and during printing, the printer wipes the ink cartridge jets at the service station. This function is user selectable during printing or between prints. Still, ink cartridge jets can become clogged, especially with prolonged exposure to the air or with nonuse.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Clogged jets Clogged jets cannot be automatically detected and therefore must be cleared manually. If a jet is clogged, it will appear in the Prime pattern as a gap in the sloping line for each cartridge. To clear a clogged jet, clean and prime the affected cartridge according to the Maintenance Guide on your system CD-ROM.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Aligning the ink cartridges Two tests are provided to help you align the cartridges: Color Deadband Compensation and Color Calibration. Color Deadband Compensation provides a method for adjusting dot placement. In bidirectional printing mode, the velocity of the carriage causes dots to miss the target area on the media.

    CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Paper axis calibration Choosing Utility Menu/Calibration Menu/Paper Axis Test lets the printer draw a set of vertical marks to calibrate the paper axis. To measure the marks laid down by the printer, you will need a ruler or scale at least 33 inches (838.2 mm) long.

    ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide To clear a cartridge-related error, press Utility Menu/Access Cartridge to move the carriage to the position which allows replacement of the ink cartridges. Check to make sure you have the correct cartridges installed in each position, that they contain the same type of ink and all cartridges are installed properly.
  • Page 27 CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide Network configuration This section covers only one network configuration for connecting the printer to your PC: one PC is connected via a crossover cable to one print server, and not to any other network. If you know your situation is different, or if you try this section and it doesn’t work, you will need to contact your system administrator.
  • Page 28 ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide Install TCP/IP on your Windows system. For Windows 95/98/ME systems: Click on Add; select Protocol, then Microsoft, then TCP/IP. For NT4.0/2000 systems: Click on the Protocols tab; select Add, and double click on TCP/IP Protocol.
  • Page 29 CADJET ® 3D Quick Start Guide If requested, insert your Windows OS disk(s) to copy required files. Click on the Services tab and double click on Microsoft TCP/IP Printing. Click on the Protocols tab when copying is finished. Double click on the TCP/IP Protocol option and Specify an IP address, Subnet Mask and gateway address for your computer.

Á To install XAdmin32: Insert the CADJET 3D System CD #1 and follow the onscreen instructions to install XAdmin32. Á To connect and configure the print server using XAdmin32: Connect one end of the crossover cable to the RJ45 socket, labeled 100/10, on the print server.

When the program starts, you will see a dialog box similar to the following: From the Devices menu at the top of the XAdmin32 window, select Setup Unconfigured Devices.

At this point, if you are setting up a computer/printer standalone configuration, you can leave the connections as they are and can start WEBXAdmin to finish configuring the print server.

    CD. ENCAD V/R Xpress RIP The ENCAD V/R Xpress RIP is a raster image processor (RIP) for printing large, complex raster and vector images. Once installed, it can be seamlessly integrated into the Windows environment, available from within any Windows application or available as a standalone application to process PostScript, PDF and HP-GL/2 files.
  • Page 39 Follow the onscreen instructions to locate the driver and launch the installation program. If you have a previous version of the ENCAD Heidi driver, a dialog will display asking if you want to overwrite the previous files. Click YES TO ALL. Then click OK after the files are installed.
  • Page 40 ® CADJET 3D Quick Start Guide In the Plotter Model dialog, click on ENCAD in the left list box (under manufacturers) and then select your printer from the right list box (under models). Click NEXT. In the Import PCP or PC2 dialog, select IMPORT FILE only if you have PCP or PC2 files from AutoCAD 13 or 14 to import.
