GLOSSARY

alignment
The placement of cartridges relative to each other. Proper
alignment will improve print quality.
application
A computer program designed to help users perform a certain
kind of work (rendering, page layout, etc.) An application differs
from an operating system (which runs the computer), a utility
(which performs maintenance or general-purpose chores), and a
language (with which computer programs are created).
banding
The white bands lines which can be produced if inkjets are
clogged or if the incorrect print mode is used.
bitmap
An image formed by a matrix of visible or invisible dots (bits). On
a computer screen, the dots are formed by pixels. Unlike vector
objects, bitmaps are resolution dependent.
bleed
Ink colors running together resulting from too much ink being
applied to the media.
calibration
The process of printing test patterns and making adjustments in
the printer's software control panel to align cartridges so that
images are correctly reproduced.
CMYK
Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black . A color model which uses
these four process colors used in offset printing. In this color
model, black is created by applying 100% of each of these four
colors. To arrive at other colors, certain percentages of these
colors are subtracted. Subtracting 100% of each of these four
colors yields white (or the color of the paper stock).
coated paper
Paper coated with certain substances to provide a surface for high
reflectance, good ink coverage, and sharp printed images.
cockle
Wavyness in paper due to heavy application of wet ink.
curl
Distortion of paper caused by a reaction to environmental
conditions. Curl can cause feeding problems or jams.
