EM Tracking Unit Setup

5.2.1

Overview

Precautions
Do not disconnect the EM Field Generator during tracking. Doing so presents an electric
shock hazard, which could result in personal injury.
The EM Tracking Unit is not intended to be used inside an MR environment since the
magnetic field of the EM Field Generator might influence the MR scanner and vice-versa.
Do not coil the EM Field Generator cable, as it produces an electric current strong enough
to create a magnetic field when the cable is in a circular formation. This magnetic field may
disturb the magnetic field of the EM Field Generator leading to compromised system
accuracy.
The embedded computing electronics and the implemented algorithms of the EM Tracking
Unit are not single-fault safe in terms of functional safety and thus may fail during
operation.
Do not drop the EM Field Generator or subject it to impacts. Physical damage to the Field
Generator may alter the calibration. Inform Brainlab Support in case of the EM Field
Generator was subjected to an impact.
Disturbances
A tracked instrument having a motorized element (e.g. shaver) can interfere with the tracking
while the motor is in use. Do not rely on tracking information while motorized instruments are in
use.
The system accuracy can be adversely affected by electromagnetic field disturbances from
other objects in the room, close proximity to metal or close proximity (within 10 m) to
another operating EM Field Generator.
After setup, always verify that system accuracy is sufficient for the planned procedure as
the influence of objects disturbing the electromagnetic field cannot be completely avoided.
Due to the working principle of electromagnetic tracking it might occur that other nearby
equipment disturbs the tracking. This can mean that the EM Instrument is no longer
tracked for a short period of time. Re-location of the other nearby equipment might be
necessary to continue the tracking.
