CHECKING THE CAM SHAFTS
1. Check:
• cam shaft lobes
Blue discoloration/pitting/scratches →
Replace the cam shaft.
2. M easure:
• cam shaft lobe dim ensions a and b
Out of specification → Replace the
cam shaft.
Camshaft lobe dimensions

Intake camshaft
Exhaust camshaft
3. M easure:
• cam shaft runout
Out of specification → Replace.
M ax. camshaft runout
0.03 mm
4. M easure:
• cam shaft-journal-to-cam shaft-cap
clearance
Out of specification → M easure the
cam shaft journal diam eter.
Camshaft-journal-to-cam-
shaft-cap clearance
0.050 ~ 0.084 mm
a. Install the cam shaft into the cylinder
head (w ithout the dow el pins and
cam shaft caps).
b. Position a strip of Plastigauge
onto the cam shaft journal as show n.
c. Install the dow el pins and cam shaft
caps.
