MPS 1000 System Hardware Overview

MPS 1000 Multiple Cabinet Systems

The MPS 1000 cabinets containing multiple VRC chassis can be networked through the Ethernet
and an ATM switching fabric. The configuration can include up to 12 chassis, for a total capacity of
384 T1 or E1 spans (9,216 or 11,520 ports).
ATM Network
The ATM network is a dual redundant Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), operating at 155
Mbps on each port. Each ATM port is an optical fiber pair (transmit and receive). The NICs of a
chassis (A and B) connect, over the optical fibers, to redundant ATM workgroup switching hubs
(primary and standby) by OC-3 terminations. The ATM switches are nonblocking and the TDM layer
is retained within the ATM packet switching protocol (layer 1 only) so that the data can be unpacked
at the destination node. As a result, any port on any span can be bridged to any other MPS 1000
chassis, TMS, DCC (span), and port on the ATM switching fabric.
