Backup And Restore Procedures

Crash Recovery

A crash occurs when the operating system sustains damage and, as a result, computer operation
cannot be restored and the server cannot be booted.

Mirrored Disk Backup and Recovery

The Speech Server implements a hardware-based RAID-1 SCSI controller. the controller provides
hot-swap removal or replacement of either drive in a dual-drive configuration. Remove one drive and
store it remotely as a backup. Insert a replacement drive so the system can rebuild the mirror. Mirror
synchronization takes approximately three hours on a 36 GB volume to provide full RAID-1
redundancy. The rebuild process is performed transparently by the hardware and has a minimal
effect on the server performance.
To restore a system, an archived drive is substituted for the primary drive of the RAID and, if
desired, is used to rebuild the secondary RAID volume. You can use the RAID software on the
system to monitor and control the RAID on the local machine or other speech servers on the
network.
You can purchase extra drives separately for backup purposes.
