Chapter 6 How to Operate the Roll Media Option
Function
Provides constant tension for loaded media (located
behind the media shaft). The bar provides constant
tension to ensure adjustment of the media.
An optical sensor on the bottom of the carriage that
detects the edge of the media. Detection of the media
edge occurs over the media guide between the capstan
and the platen. The media edge detection sensor
provides the following functions:
· Determines the actual width and location of the media
after it has been loaded. This is required to calculate the
media centerline. The media centerline must be loaded
+/- 5mm from the centerline of the Roll Media unit. No
printing is allowed under the following condition:
Actual Print Width > Media Width - 8mm
· Tracks media drift during printing. If media drift
exceeds 3mm, printing is halted after the current print
is completed. An error message is then reported to the
operator and he will be asked to cut and reload the
media. If the media drift should recover to < 3mm
before the print is completed no error is reported and
normal operation will continue. If the drift exceeds
4mm at any time, printing will be stopped immediately,
and an error is generated.
The capstan is a large roller that consists of an
aluminum tube with stub shafts welded into it. The
capstan is coated in precision ground rubber. A high
resolution encoder is mounted at one end. An
electromagnetic brake is installed at the opposite end to
stop media drift while imaging.
Note: The capstan must always be clean
and smooth. Always clean any kind of debris
that might collect on it, especially UV inks
(See Maintenance section for cleaning
instructions).
