* NOTE Damage to the stowage compart‐
ment under the ashtray due to intense
heat
The stowage compartment under the ashtray
is not heat resistant and could be damaged if
you rest a lit cigarette on it.
Make sure that the ashtray is fully

engaged.
The driving characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on the distribution of the load within
the vehicle. You should bear the following in
mind when loading the vehicle:
never exceed the permissible gross mass or
R
the permissible axle loads for the vehicle
(including occupants).
Information can be found on the vehicle iden‐
tification plate ( page 424).

the load must not protrude above the upper
R
edge of the seat backrests.
when transporting objects in the load com‐
R
partment, always install the load compart‐
ment cover and partitioning net.
always place the load behind unoccupied
R
seats if possible.
secure the load using the tie-down eyes and
R
distribute the load evenly.
Notes on driving with a roof load
Evenly distribute the roof load, and place
R
heavy objects at the bottom. Also comply
with the notes on loading the vehicle
( page 128).

Drive attentively, and avoid suddenly pulling
R
away, braking and steering as well as rapid
cornering.
When transporting roof loads and when the
R
vehicle is fully loaded or fully occupied,
select drive programs ; and A. These
are designed to focus on stability
