While configurat ion files and shell script s have t he sam e synt ax, t he device applies configurat ion
files different ly t han it runs shell script s. This is explained below.

You have t o run t he aforem ent ioned exam ple as a shell script because t he first com m and is run in
Pr ivile ge m ode. I f you rem ove t he first com m and, you have t o run t he exam ple as a configurat ion
file because t he rest of t he com m ands are execut ed in Con figu r a t ion m ode.
Comments in Configuration Files or Shell Scripts
I n a configurat ion file or shell script , use " # " or " !" as t he first charact er of a com m and line t o have
t he device t reat t he line as a com m ent .
Your configurat ion files or shell script s can use " exit " or a com m and line consist ing of a single " !" t o
have t he device exit sub com m and m ode.
Not e: " exit " or " ! '" m ust follow sub com m ands if it is t o m ake t he device exit sub
com m and m ode.

Errors in Configuration Files or Shell Scripts
When you apply a configurat ion file or run a shell script , t he device processes t he file line- by- line.
The device checks t he first line and applies t he line if no errors are det ect ed. Then it cont inues wit h
t he next line. I f t he device finds an error, it st ops applying t he configurat ion file or shell script and
generat es a log.
You can change t he way a configurat ion file or shell script is applied. I nclude setenv stop-on-
error off in t he configurat ion file or shell script . The device ignores any errors in t he configurat ion
file or shell script and applies all of t he valid com m ands. The device st ill generat es a log for any
errors.
