14.4 Technical Reference

The following sect ion cont ains addit ional t echnical inform at ion about t he feat ures described in t his
chapt er.
OCSP
OCSP ( Online Cert ificat e St at us Prot ocol) allows an applicat ion or device t o check whet her a
cert ificat e is valid. Wit h OCSP t he device checks t he st at us of individual cert ificat es inst ead of
downloading a Cert ificat e Revocat ion List ( CRL) . OCSP has t wo m ain advant ages over a CRL. The
first is real- t im e st at us inform at ion. The second is a reduct ion in net work t raffic since t he device
only get s inform at ion on t he cert ificat es t hat it needs t o verify, not a huge list . When t he device
request s cert ificat e st at us inform at ion, t he OCSP server ret urns a " expired", " current " or " unknown"
response.
