15.5 WWW Overview

The following figure shows secure and insecure m anagem ent of t he device com ing in from t he
WAN. HTTPS and SSH access are secure. HTTP , and Telnet m anagem ent access are not secure.

15.5.1 Service Access Limitations

A service cannot be used t o access t he device when you have disabled t hat service in t he
corresponding screen.

15.5.2 System Timeout

There is a lease t im eout for adm inist rat ors. The device aut om at ically logs you out if t he
m anagem ent session rem ains idle for longer t han t his t im eout period. The m anagem ent session
does not t im e out when a st at ist ics screen is polling.
Each user is also forced t o log in t he device for aut hent icat ion again when t he reaut hent icat ion t im e
expires.
You can change t he t im eout set t ings in t he Use r screens.

15.5.3 HTTPS

You can set t he device t o use HTTP or HTTPS ( HTTPS adds securit y) for Web Configurat or sessions.
HTTPS ( HyperText Transfer Prot ocol over Secure Socket Layer, or HTTP over SSL) is a web prot ocol
t hat encrypt s and decrypt s web pages. Secure Socket Layer ( SSL) is an applicat ion- level prot ocol
t hat enables secure t ransact ions of dat a by ensuring confident ialit y ( an unaut horized part y cannot
read t he t ransferred dat a) , aut hent icat ion ( one part y can ident ify t he ot her part y) and dat a
int egrit y ( you know if dat a has been changed) .
I t relies upon cert ificat es, public keys, and privat e keys ( see
inform at ion) .
HTTPS on t he device is used so t hat you can securely access t he device using t he Web Configurat or.
The SSL prot ocol specifies t hat t he HTTPS server ( t he device) m ust always aut hent icat e it self t o t he
HTTPS client ( t he com put er which request s t he HTTPS connect ion wit h t he device) , whereas t he
