RDS
(Radio Data System)
Data transmission system for FM radio
stations.
RON
(Research Octane Number)
Indicates the petrol octane number,
determined by standardised methods.
The RON is a measure of the ->knock
resistance of the petrol. In numerical
terms, the RON is approximately
10 points above the ->MON.
SMS
(Short Message Service)
Mobile network service for sending
short messages. Commonly used to
describe the message itself.
SRS
(Supplemental Restraint System)
Additional restraint systems such as
belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
Symmetrical dipped beam
Dipped-beam headlamps setting that il-
luminates one side of the carriageway
as much as the other.
Telematics
Joint term for telecommunications and
information technology.
Tightening torque
Force with which bolts, such as the
wheel bolts, must be tightened
(->torque).
TIREFIT kit
Accessories for temporary repairs to
flat tyres. The TIREFIT kit consists of a
filler bottle with sealant, a filler hose, a
valve core extractor with valve and an
electric air pump.
Torque
Force exerted by a twisting motion
around a centre axis, e.g. when a wheel
bolt is tightened. Engine torque is the
force transferred to the transmission.
Maximum torque is achieved at a cer-
tain engine speed. The higher the max-
imum torque, the more force is trans-
ferred to the wheels.

Technical terms
Torque converter
On vehicles with an automatic trans-
mission, the torque converter has the
same function as the clutch on vehicles
with a manual transmission.
Traction
Force transferred from the vehicle to
the road via the wheels and a term
used to describe grip.
Traction mode
Active acceleration of the vehicle by
adding more throttle.
Xenon headlamp
Front headlamp with an electric arc in-
stead of a heat filament to generate
more intense light.
