The selector lever returns to its original po-
sition.

Press the button on the selector lever
in the direction of arrow P.
The park position is engaged.

If you depress the brake pedal and push the
selector lever up or down, you will cancel the
park position.
If you wish to shift directly from the park position
into reverse gear, depress the brake pedal and
push the selector lever up beyond the first point
of resistance.
If you wish to shift directly from the park position
into the drive position, depress the brake pedal
and push the selector lever down beyond the
first point of resistance.

If the engine speed is too high, you cannot
shift directly from D to R or from R to D or direct-
ly into P. The transmission could otherwise be
damaged.

Transmission position P, R, N or D appears
in the transmission position display in the speed-
ometer display.
Gear shift process
The automatic transmission shifts into in-
dividual gears automatically. This automat-
ic gearshifting behaviour is determined by:
the selector lever position D
( page 256) with shift ranges 6*, 5*,
4, 3, 2 and 1 ( page 259)
the drive program selected
(S/C/M) ( page 262)
the position of the accelerator pedal
( page 260)
the road speed
Gear shift displays
The current transmission position and the
drive program (S/C/M) appear in the
speedometer display.

When the transmission is in position D
( page 259), you can influence the gear-
shifts made by the automatic transmission
using the steering wheel gearshift buttons
by:
changing gear yourself
restricting the shift range
!
If the gearshift display has failed, pull away
carefully to check whether the desired gear is
engaged. It is best to select transmission posi-
tion D and drive program S or C. Do not restrict
the shift range.
