ELCODE
(Electronic Code System)
System which electronically checks
whether a person entering or driving
the vehicle is entitled to do so, and
which forms part of the anti-theft sys-
tem of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
EMC
(Electromagnetic Compatibility)
The electrical and electronic compo-
nents of the vehicle are shielded
against interference fields, e.g. trans-
mitters, radar systems, power lines and
radiophones.
EN 228
European standard for unleaded petrol.
Engine oil viscosity
Measure of the internal oil friction (vis-
cosity) at different temperatures. The
higher the temperature the oil can tol-
erate without thinning too much, or the
lower the temperature it can tolerate
without thickening too much, the bet-
ter the viscosity.

ESP
(Electronic Stability Program)
Improves driving stability and ->trac-
tion when cornering and in critical situ-
ations, e.g. if there is a risk of skidding.
ETS
(electronic traction control)
Brakes the drive wheels individually if
they start to spin. This enables you to
pull away and accelerate on slippery
surfaces.
GPS
(Global Positioning System)
System for detecting geographical lo-
cation. The receiver in the vehicle com-
pares satellite signals with a digital
map (e.g. on CD ROM) for the purposes
of determining the location of the vehi-
cle and for navigation route guidance.
GSM
(Global System for Mobile Communica-
tions)
International transmission standard for
mobile phones (mobiles). It enables
you to use your mobile phone abroad.
The transmission method is digital.

Technical terms
HiP
(High Performance bulbs)
Bulbs containing xenon used in the rear
lamp units.
HOLD
Holds the vehicle stationary without
the driver having to brake.
Instrument cluster operating system
You can use the instrument cluster op-
erating system to look up information
relating to your vehicle and to make ad-
justments. The driver's display is used
as the display screen. The buttons on
the multi-function steering wheel con-
trol the display and the settings in the
instrument cluster operating system.
Interior motion sensor
Anti-theft system that triggers an alarm
if your vehicle is locked and someone
breaks a side window and reaches into
the vehicle.
