device icon
An
icon on the back of the system unit that shows the device that can be
plugged into the connector.
device name
The name by which a device or controller is identified in the system.
diagnostics
Programs, located in read-only memory, that detect and identify abnormal
system hardware operation. (See read-only memory.)
disk
A flat circular plate with a coating on which data is magnetically stored in
concentric circles (tracks). A disk resides permanently inside a disk drive,
while a diskette is removable.
disk drive
A device that holds a disk. The drive contains mechanical components that
spin the disk and move the read/write heads that store and read information
on the surface of the disk.
disk server
A hardware system designed to provide operating system and data storage
for other users.
down-line load
To send a copy of a system image or other file over a communications line
to the memory of a target node.
drive leader
A plastic leader inside the TZ30 tape drive. The cartridge leader on the
magnetic tape and the drive leader on the tape drive mate. The drive
leader draws the magnetic tape out of the tape cartridge and onto a take-
up reel inside the drive. As the tape is wound onto the take-up reel, it
passes the magnetic read and write heads.
error message
A message displayed by a system to indicate a mistake or malfunction.
Ethernet
A type of local area network based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with
Collision Detection (CSMAlCD).
