Checking camshafts

Camshaft removed.
Check height of cams.
Check bearing play of camshafts with Plasti-
gage, BMW No. 00 2 590.
Wear values:
Cam height, inlet ..............min. 33.00 mm (1.230 in)
Cam height, exhaust ........min. 32.15 mm (1.266 in)
Installed clearance ........max. 0.100 mm (0.0039 in)
Installation is the reverse of the removal proce-
dure: pay particular attention to the following.

Caution:
The grooves in the bearing caps and seats are oil
ducts.

Caution:
Align bearing caps, make sure that bearing caps
and bearing seats are correctly aligned. Run a finger
along the join to check alignment.
The inlet camshaft bears a punch mark (arrow) as
identification.
Make sure that the camshafts turn easily and
smoothly.
Turn the engine over several times by hand.
Recheck valve clearances.
Install the cylinder head cover before returning
the drive swinging arm to its original position.

Caution:
When installing, note the correct positions of the
spring struts.

Note:
Make sure the long lever of the parking mechanism
latches. If necessary, move the lever to the drive po-
sition first, and then move it to the park position.
