# Replacing chain tensioner

Remove cylinder head cover.
Lock engine at TDC.
Press chain tensioner to the outside by means of
chain tensioning rail.
When installing:
Install liberally oiled chain tensioner with flat to-
ward chain.
Turn engine through at least one full revolution.
Check valve clearances.
X
Tightening torques:
Screw plug ................................................... 35 Nm

Removing cylinder head

Drain coolant.
Position car jack below joint.
Move drive swinging arm clear.

# Removing cylinder head cover

Move drive swinging arm clear.

Slacken clamp (arrow) with pliers,
BMW Nr. 17 5 500 securing breather hose.
Disconnect hose.
Remove securing screws and remove cylinder
head cover.
When installing:
Before installing, clean cylinder head gasket and
groove for gasket in cylinder head cover.

Caution:
Make sure that gasket and cylinder head cover are
free of oil.
