When installing:
Coat ball joint fastener with Optimoly TA and
tighten in sliding-tube bridge (1) using 46 mm
(1.81 in) socket wrench insert,
BMW No. 31 5 630.
Operating fluids:
Optimoly TA

Tightening torques:
Ball joint to fork slider bridge ...................... 230 Nm
Installing slider tube bridge with slider
tubes
Installation is the reverse of the removal proce-
dure: pay particular attention to the following.

Caution:
Take care not to damage the seals on the slider
tubes.
Remove all traces of old thread-locking com-
pound from the threads.
Operating fluids:
BMW telescopic fork
oil ........................................ 0.32 l (0.56 Imp. pints/
0.34 US quarts)/slider tube

Tightening torques:
Leading link to fork slider bridge
(+ Loctite 243) ............................................ 127 Nm
Fastener, brake line to slider tube bridge
...................................................................... 5 Nm

Measuring telescopic forks

Caution:
After an accident, always examine the telescopic
forks for cracks and signs of damage.

Checking runout of fixed tube

Place both ends of fixed tube in V-blocks.
Turn fixed fork tube slowly and measure it with a
dial gauge, BMW No. 00 2 510.

Caution:
Do not straighten distorted fixed tubes: always re-
place them.
Setting:
Permissible runout: .......... max. 0.1 (0.004) mm (in)
