Replacing sealing ring of output shaft
in housing

Note:
Additional work necessary if drive swinging arm is to
remain installed:
Remove rear wheel
Install support for spring struts
– Remove complete variator assembly.
– Remove rear wheel.
– Remove gearbox shafts.
•
Pry out shaft sealing ring, using a cranked screw-
driver, or with screwdriver and rest for leverage.
When installing:

Install shaft sealing ring with special assembly
tool, BMW No. 11 7 592.
Replacing shaft sealing ring for varia-
tor shaft in gearbox cover
(shaft removed)
•
Uniformly chamfer collar at cover.

Caution:
Deburr seat for shaft sealing ring and remove metal
chippings.

Caution:
Spray seats of shaft sealing rings.
•
Install dry shaft sealing ring until flush with flat of
housing, using mandrel, BMW No. 11 7 581.

Caution:
Make sure that shaft sealing ring does not contact
grooved ball bearing - check clearance.

Caution:
Install cover with new seal and tighten fasteners in
diagonally opposite sequence.
When installing:
•
Install shaft sealing ring with sealing lip to the in-
side.
Setting:

Clearance................0.1 - 0.3 mm (0.004 - 0.012 in)
