27.5 Sonar troubleshooting

Problems with the sonar and their possible causes and solutions are described here.
Problem
Sonar data not available on multifunction
display.
Problematic depth readings or sonar
image.
Incorrect speed reading

Unit power supply fault.
Other unit fault.

/ RayNet network problem.
Software mismatch between equipment
may prevent communication.
Gain or Frequency settings may be
inappropriate for present conditions.
Unit power supply fault
Unit cable fault.
Transducer fault
Other unit fault.
Vessel stationary
High vessel speed
Scroll speed set to zero
Paddle wheel fault
No speed offset set
Incorrect calibration
Possible solutions
Check the unit power supply and cables.
Refer to the instructions supplied with the unit.
Check that the unit is correctly connected to a Raymarine network SeaTalk
switch or crossover coupler (as applicable).
Check the status of the Raymarine network switch (if applicable).
Check that SeaTalk

/ RayNet cables are free from damage.
Contact Raymarine technical support.
Check the sonar presets, gain and frequency settings.
Check the voltage from the power supply, if this is too low it can affect the
transmitting power of the unit.
Ensure that the power, transducer and all other cables to the unit are
properly connected and free from damage.
Check that the transducer is mounted correctly and is clean.
If you have a transom-mount transducer, check that the transducer hasn't
kicked up due to hitting an object.
Refer to the instructions supplied with the unit.
Fish arches are not displayed if the vessel is stationary, fish will appear on
the display as straight lines.
Turbulence around the transducer may be confusing the unit.
Adjust scroll speed
Check that the paddle wheel is clean.
Add speed offset.
Re-calibrate equipment
New a Series / New c Series / New e Series
