Flash Memory
Unlike volatile RAM, flash memory retains its contents when printer power is
turned off. Flash memory is contained in two ICs (integrated circuits) soldered
to the controller PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) and in an 80-pin 2MB
SIMM (single in-line memory module) at location U38, giving a total of 4MB of
flash memory for the printer. Printer emulation and operating system software
are loaded into flash memory at the factory, but you will have to install
software in some situations:
•
If the customer buys an Expansion-CT option after the printer is installed
•
If the customer needs to upgrade printer software
•
If you have replaced the printer controller PCBA
•
If you have replaced the flash memory SIMM
Loading Flash Memory
Emulation and operating system software are stored as a compressed file on
a 3.5 inch floppy diskette. This file is "executable"—you will expand it and
copy it into printer flash memory.
You can load software through either the serial or parallel port of the printer.
The load commands are different, depending on the printer port you use.
These differences are explained in the note following step 17.
IMPORTANT
When downloading emulation and operating system software to the
printer, all other optional font files, customer-supplied logos, and setup
files will be erased. You will need to reload these files, so before you
start a download procedure, make sure you have all of the necessary
installation files on hand.
1. Make a printout of all saved configurations. (Refer to the User's Manual .)
Installing new software erases all saved configurations. After installing the
software, you will use the printouts to restore printer configuration.
2. Set the printer power switch to O (off).
3. If the printer is already connected to the serial or parallel port of a
computer capable of running an MS-DOS® based PKZIP® self-extracting
file, go to step 10. If not, go to step 4.
4. Unplug the AC power cord from the printer.
5. Disconnect all data input cables from the printer interface.
