Glossary of Terms
PPTP extends the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) standard for traditional dial-up networking. PPTP is best suited for the
remote access applications of VPNs, but it also supports LAN internetworking. PPTP operates at Layer 2 of the OSI
model.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) –
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), is a routing protocol used to determine the correct route for packets within IP networks.
It was designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force to serve as an Interior Gateway Protocol replacing RIP.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) –
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving e-mail. However, since it's
limited in its ability to queue messages at the receiving end, it's usually used with one of two other protocols, POP3 or
Internet Message Access Protocol, that let the user save messages in a server mailbox and download them periodically
from the server.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) –
The key feature of a VPN, however, is its ability to use public networks like the Internet rather than rely on private leased
lines. VPN technologies implement restricted-access networks that utilize the same cabling and routers as a public
network, and they do so without sacrificing features or basic security.
