Router Interfaces

Four router interfaces are located directly on the Model 5380 and Model 5580
router modules. With two net modules installed on a router, an additional two to
eight external interfaces are available for connection to LANs or WANs.
Figure 1-2 shows a block diagram of the router interfaces.

Onboard Router Interfaces

The onboard router interfaces connect to the System 5000 Ethernet or token ring
backplanes. These interfaces provide LAN connectivity for devices attached to
Ethernet and token ring host modules installed in the same System 5000 hub.

Net Modules

Bay Networks provides a variety of I/O modules, called net modules, to support
multiprotocol routing. These net modules plug into the Model 5380 and Model
5580 router modules (see Figure 1-3).
