    Supported Protocols Depending on the data encapsulation type and virtual connection type (PVC or SVC) you choose for the service record, the Model 5782 VNR supports various protocols. Table 1-1 lists all supported protocols for standard PVCs and SVCs using Logical Link Control/Subnetwork Access Protocol (LLC/SNAP), NLPID, NULL, LANE 802.3, or LANE 802.5 data encapsulation.

    ARP and Inverse ARP Support The Model 5782 VNR supports the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), enabling the router to dynamically resolve IP network layer protocol-to-VPI/VCI address mappings. ATM learns the PVC address by detecting the PVC that delivered the ARP response.

    Model 5000BH chassis backplane can immediately forward both LAN and ATM traffic. Model 5782 VNR modules attach to one of two Centillion ATM buses on a Model 5000BH backplane. Switching in a Model 5000BH chassis spans 12 of 14 slots.

    The Parallel Packet Express (PPX) is a redundant bus with four independent parallel paths that perform at 1 Gb/s between router interfaces. Model 5782 VNR modules attach to a Model 5000BH chassis with a PPX interconnection. The PPX backplane interconnection performs the packet- to-packet transfer from one router installed in the chassis to another router installed in the same chassis.

    The assembly includes inserter/extractor levers and captive retaining screws at the top and bottom of the module front panel. Each Model 5782 VNR occupies one slot in the Model 5000BH chassis. The router module connects directly to the Model 5000BH ATM backplane.

The flash memory card provides storage for the router nonvolatile file system (NVFS) including software to boot the router independently of the other modules in the Model 5000BH chassis.

    Segmentation and reassembly operate at the ATM adaptation layer (AAL) by mapping user information into cell payloads (48 bytes of a 53-byte cell). When the Model 5782 VNR is installed in the Model 5000BH chassis, the VNR handles segmentation and reassembly of incoming packets to ATM cells and outgoing ATM cells to packets.

    Installing the Flash Memory Card The Model 5782 VNR uses a flash memory card to provide storage for the router nonvolatile file system (NVFS). When you remove a formatted memory card, the NVFS removes access to the card. When you insert and format a card (or insert a formatted card), the NVFS automatically provides access to the card.
